Cedar Hall gets approval to become a Bed and BreakfastKathy Brower
November 13, 2012 Cedar Hall, located at 3712 Broadway in Bartlett, got approval from the Bartlett Mayor and his board of aldermen to become a bed and breakfast. Boarding neighbors of Cedar Hall got to express their opinions at a meeting held on October 9 at Bartlett City Hall. Neighbors who were against the change to a bed and breakfast had concerns of noise levels and traffic concerns, because Cedar Hall is located on a two-lane road. Markham Bledsoe and his family live directly across from Cedar Hall and Markham and his wife spoke at the meeting in opposition. Bledsoe's main concern was the safety of his daughter when she plays outside. However, after listening to the new owner of Cedar Hall, Denise Suthoff, talk out the concerns, he feels more comfortable with the mayor and board of aldermen's decision. "Well, now that they have explained a few things and especially if they can get the egress to go out onto highway 70, it will solve the majority of my issues, especially the safety of my daughter," Bledsoe said. Denise Suthoff , who also owns Heartwood Hall in Rossville, TN, plans on adding different elements to make Cedar Hall a suitable wedding venue. "We will add a formal garden that will be used for wedding ceremonies and they we will add a barn, I call it a barn and yet we have one at Heartwood Hall barn, we call it a barn and yet it's very elegant," Suthoff said. Suthoff did bring a traffic engineer to the meeting to show to traffic will not be effected during the peak hours and that no loud music will be played after 8pm. University of Memphis declines in enrollmentKathy Brower
October 1, 2012 Enrollment has decreased for the first time since 2008 at the University of Memphis. The enrollment has dropped by 2 percent, which is around 500 students. Betty Huff, Vice Provost of Enrollment Services, spoke on the issue. "We have looked at the data across the 3-5 year period and the decrease this year looks fairly significant, but if you look at it across time, we had a very large bump last year," said Huff. Huff believes tuition increases and fewer students that have acceptable ACT/SAT scores might be a cause for the decline. "We will spend some time looking at the high school graduation rate, we will be able to use some national data to tell us what's happening at the national level and evaluate whether the decrease is due to just fewer students available," Huff said. The U of M honors program has reached its record high of 1,848 students, with 469 of them being freshman. The Office of Recruitment and Orientation hosts Campus Day multiple times a year to teach students about the university and encourage them to come to the University of Memphis. This is one of the ways Huff hopes to get the numbers back up for next year. University of Memphis Blue LineKathy Brower
September 18, 2012 The University of Memphis shuttle system called the Blue Line started assisting students around campus in June of this year. Russell Born, president of the Student Government Association, was apart of the decision to implement the Blue Line. "Here at the University of Memphis we do have a transportation fee and that fee can go toward a lot of things but the University felt that one of the best ways to use that fee was for the Blue Line," said Born. However, since fall semester has started, many students are not see taking advantage of the free shuttle. Student Alex Roubidoux finds the Blue Line to be unnecessary. "I don't believe it's beneficial because our campus is not that large. By the time someone takes the bus and gets off, it's just not worth the price [for the University] and it's a short walk everywhere," said Roubidoux. Other than shuttling guests around campus daily, the Blue Line also shuttles students to the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium for home football games. Three hundred sixty seven students road the shuttle to the first game of the season on September 1. In order to make getting on the Blue Line easier, the University of Memphis has partnered up with the TransLoc app on smart phones to show where the busses are located at all times.
