At the University of Memphis, students are given the opportunity to work in jobs in their respective career paths right on campus. For journalism majors, there are a number of choices. Radio, public relations and Internet, to name a few. The university's newspaper The Daily Helmsman, offers positions for students to better their reporting and basic writing skills, the main tools needed for any job in this field, and for many others as well.
The Helmsman staff invited students on a tour of their on-campus newsroom during a typical workday. They got to ask questions to the editors about the everyday life of a reporter, what's expected of the reporters, and how to become a staff member in the future. "It's not just for print journalism majors," Editor in chief Chelsea Boozer said. "It's for all concentrations." After the tour, students enjoyed pizza and soft drinks while Boozer and other members of the Helmsman spoke and fielded questions about the newspaper, and of journalism itself. U of M Hardin Chair of Excellence and professor Otis Sanford shared his thoughts about getting involved in journalism, and the importance of it lasting through the future. "There's just something magical about what we do," Sanford said. "It's a wonderful profession, where you can be the voice to those who might not have one....and you get to make people mad!" "I've done that plenty of times," Boozer added with a smile. "It's about getting the truth and reporting it, and sometimes..it makes people angry." The Daily Helmsman covers a variety of issues and stories on and around the U of M campus, as well as prominent, national news. Articles from the Helmsman can be found at their website www.dailyhelmsman.com. The newspaper is free to all U of M students. Campus Safety at U of M As technology of the world advances at an incredible speed, the need to keep pace with these advances rises as well. Computers are getting smaller, phones are getting smarter and more powerful, and the necessity to use technology to promote safety is becoming easier.
The University of Memphis helps it's students and faculty be safe on campus with a variety of safety features. One of these features are the emergency phones, or "Code Blue Phones," that are located all over campus and parking lots. These phones can be identified by the blue, police light on the top of each unit labeled "ASSISTANCE" or "EMERGENCY." All calls placed on these phones go directly to U of M Police Services. These emergency phones are helpful in the event of an emergency on campus, and were especially helpful when they were first implemented. This was a time when cell phone use was not as popular. To see all where all Code Blue phones are located, click here. As cell phone use skyrocketed, the U of M wanted to keep up with the times. In 2007, Tiger Text was introduced. This is a messaging service for which students and faculty may sign up to receive text messages pertaining to campus crimes, inclement weather, school closings and other university-related emergencies. U of M Police Director Bruce Harber says "The number of Tiger Text users are going up everyday, we're somewhere around 10,000 users as of right now." To sign up for Tiger Text, click here This year, the U of M introduced a brand new safety feature. Now, in the event of a campus emergency, a warning can be sent to all computers on campus that will flash the details on the warning on the screens. This can be very helpful to those who don't have Tiger Text, or simply for those who are in class. Chelsea Boozer, the Editor-In-Chief at the university's newspaper The Daily Helmsman, said, "This is really good for students who are in class, to be up to speed if there's an emergency." But what if you do have Tiger Text? "Well, it can be especially helpful for students who aren't using their phones during class time," she said laughing. Both Harber and Boozer agree that the University of Memphis has done well with keeping up with the advances of technology and using it to keep the campus safe. As social media continues to rise, the U of M is using it as another means to send emergency notifications. "Any Tiger Text that is sent out, is automatically uploaded to Facebook and Twitter," Harber said. He believes that social media is "the wave of the future" and will continue to serve as a valuable resource to promote campus safety. |

Student Living at the University of Memphis
Saving money is important for everyone, especially for college students. With all the big choices and decisions for students to make, one choice can save them money. Choosing a suitable place to live, whether its on campus in a traditional dorm, or off campus in in a house or apartment can add up to hundreds of dollars in savings.
On campus dorms are generally the go-to place for students to live while attending college. With the benefit of being right on the main campus, going to class everyday is easy. Off campus housing can provide the same benefit, as well as having a few of their own. At the University of Memphis, there are several off campus choices like apartments, condos and houses that are a short walk away. The Stratum on Highland, a nearby campus apartment, provides the benefits of being close to campus, more luxurious living and can help students save money in the long run versus staying at an on-campus dorm. For example, a room at Carpenter Complex, one of the on campus apartments, is $3,190 for the semester, or typically 3 months. A spacious, one bedroom studio apartment at The Stratum is $1,020 per month, or $3,060 for the same three months. More information about the floor plans is available at www.stratumonhighland.com Kelvin Hendrix, general manager of The Stratum, explains some of the benefits for students living off campus. "They don't have to purchase a meal plan....which can be a big savings," he said. All rooms at The Stratum come fully furnished just like traditional dorms, but can enjoy more privacy than a dorm. "With a traditional dorm, most students share one bedroom, off campus housing they usually have their own private bedroom," Hendrix said. It should be incumbent for the student to look at all the available options on and off campus and decide which choice will be the best for them to live by not breaking the bank. New Grizzlies Owners and Impact on City of MemphisWith the addition of local celebrities to the Memphis Grizzlies ownership, the team doesn't appear to be moving anytime soon. The rumors of the Grizz moving came when billionaire Robert Pera bought the team earlier in 2012. But now there's some familiar faces that are now the minority owners of the team.
Celebrity Justin Timberlake and former congressman Harold Ford took a share in the Grizzlies franchise in September. Timberlake, who was a regular at the Los Angeles Lakers games, now looks to be a regular at FedEx Forum. "The Grindhouse" sits in the heart of the downtown area on the historic Beale Street and has been the home of the Grizz since 2004. The Grizzlies recent success in the NBA postseason has brought a rejuvenating fan base to the entire city of Memphis, and especially in the downtown area. Jay Wells, senior manager of Silky O' Sullivans, which sits right across from the Forum, says that downtown is "a carnival like atmosphere" when the Grizz are playing. To see the Grizzlies entire 2012-13 schedule, go to www.nba.com/grizzlies/schedule The Grizzlies have a great impact on the economy of the entire city of Memphis, not just the downtown area.
