NABJ Wants To Give BackStudents who are apart of the NABJ chapter at the University of Memphis are trying to reach out to a school in Ghana, West Africa. They are raising money for the school to get computers.
Instead of mailing the money to the school, NABJ wants to go to Ghana through the study abroad office and personally hand them the money. This way they can meet the students, interact with them, and actually live in the village. A meeting was held to discuss the details on when they would leave and how they would raise money for the school. They plan to have the money raised for the computers by the summer of 2014 through fundraising and other events on campus. |

Starting October 1, The University of Memphis will be adapting a new tobacco policy. It states that University of Memphis students, staff, and faculty cannot use tobacco products on any U of M owned or leased property. This means a quick smoke break on the way to class, in between classes, or in your car is no longer okay.
"This could probably cause a problem for students because so many U of M students smoke," says one student. There are, however two designated areas on campus where tobacco use is permitted. One is located in between the CFA building and Engineering building near Central Avenue. The other is across campus in between Patterson Hall and Ellington. The policy was issued September 13, 2012 by the Vice President for Business and Finance and the Human Resources office at U of M. The policies objective is to get students, staff, and faculty on the right track for a healthier lifestyle. The supporters and creators of this policy hope to reduce the number of smokers on campus by implementing these new guidelines. -Kelsey Semien

The Great American Smoke Out
|
|
Americans are being encouraged to break their bad habit and put down the cigaretts. The Great American Smoke Out is a day that smokers are asked to stop smoking for a day or quit altogether. This is the 37th annual smoke out day hosted by the American Cancer Society, yet 45 million Americans still smok. More than half of these Americans have tried to quit.
Chris Whitten has been trying to break his habit for the past few years now. he says for him smoking is a stress reliever as well as a social activity. He is the managing editor for the Daily Helmsman, the University of Memphis' campus newspaper. The stress from his job and school is one of the main reasons it has been so hard for him to quit.
His friends and family are his biggest suporters when it comes to him quitting. This Smoke Out Day Whitten is going to try once more to quit because his grandfather has recently become ill due to habitual cigarrett smoke.
