Memphis Tiger Press Conference after 37-23 win over Tulane

Picture
Over the past 3 Seasons the Memphis Tigers have won just 7 football games, but this year's team has shown hope of improvement especially after Friday's win over Tulane.

The Tigers fought hard and pulled out a win over their conference rival, with new head coach Justin Fuente; the tigers could be on their way to success. In Friday night's game, the tigers showed signs of maturity especially on their offense with less detrimental mistakes and fumbles. Season Ticket holders have not neglected their team due to the lack luster season. Friday’s attendance was one of the highest of the season.

The tigers beat Tulane 37-23, a bit more comfortable than their 14-10 victory over Rice earlier in the season. Coach Fuente says, “The fans are doing their job. Fans in the stands really boost the boy’s morale.”

The tigers have just 2 games left and if they win just one more it will be the most wins in a season since 2008.

Football Injuries

Picture

It's Football season! Which means tailgating, Sunday afternoon football, and plenty of cheering for your favorite team. It's not often that anyone thinks about the dangers of the sport.

According to American Association of Neurological Surgeons, football is the third most dangerous sport after diving and cycling. Over the years, measures have been taken to make the game safer. From the helmets to the padding, the gear has evolved to keep up with the intensity of the game.

Hospitals see thousands of players a year, mostly on the high school level, suffering from head, neck, and spinal injuries. The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research says that proper coaching from an early age is helpful in keeping players safe.

Memphis State Eight Day

Picture
In 1959, eight African-American students integrated the University of Memphis Campus. Since then, many things have changed. Those eight students, known as the Memphis State Eight, are more than proud to see how far this campus has come. Over fifty years later, the city of Memphis has honored them with a historical marker on the East side of the Administration building on campus.

Tuesday September 18, 2012 students and administration hosted a brunch honoring the Memphis State Eight- Rose Blakney, Sammie Burnett, Eleanor Gandy, Marvis LaVerne Kneeland, Luther McClellan, Ralph Prater, Bertha Rogers and John Simpson. Seven of the eight are still living.

Immediately following the brunch, an outdoor ceremony was held. City Mayor AC Wharton, along with other elected officials, spoke as well as proclaimed September 18, Memphis State Eight Day. The historical marker was unveiled during the ceremony by University of Memphis President, Shirley Raines, and student leaders.

Memphis State Eight to be Honored

Picture

In 1969, then Memphis State University, eight African-American students stepped foot on the University of Memphis Campus for the first time. These students were under strict orders to be on campus no earlier than 8am and off campus no later than noon.

Now, more than fifty years later, the granddaughter of one the first eight, is a freshman here at the University, and the city of Memphis is finding ways to honor their presence that was once here.

September 18, 2012, 53 years after the campus was integrated, a historical marker is set to be unveiled on campus in their honor.

Dean of Multicultural Affairs, Lonnie Latham, says,  “The day will begin with a brunch where the Memphis State eight will speak. Immediately following, there will be an outdoor ceremony where Mayor AC Wharton will speak and unveil the historical marker.”

All students are invited to attend both of these events.
