Memphis, Tenn. (Insight News) Today the Shelby County Board of Education tried to come up with what the new merged school district will be. Today’s discussions focused on core beliefs and mission statements to create the best school system in the state.
“This set of meeting is important because the board has correctly realized that they got to get some things, some common beliefs and mission and vision together to make some of those important decisions that are gonna be coming out over the next couple of months And most importantly budget,” said School Board Superintendent John Aitken. With members from both sides of the school districts present they were able to compare achievement gaps in Shelby County to other districts in Tennessee. There weren’t a lot of fireworks at today’s meeting as the focus was on broader issues. “I don’t think my colleagues are going to vote to close any schools particularly in the inner-city and that’s where all of them are. I don’t think they’re gonna vote to do that unless there are some compelling overriding reason to do so,” said Kenneth Whalum, school board member. There are only 15 months until the 2013 school year, but there are major decisions to be made.“The most controversy and the most discussion are gonna be the ones that have to do with outsourcing of custodial work and transportation. |

Will Pinnacle stay or leave? Decisions are Still Up in the Air
Memphis, Tenn. (Insight News) Pinnacle Airlines new chief financial officer, Curt Berchtold, may have caused a stir in the city of Memphis with a leaked document were he is announcing plans to relocate back home to Minnesota. The problem with that is the airline is the company’s headquarters is based in Memphis. And there is a possibility the company could be preparing to take-off along with the Berchtolds. In the leaked email the CFO states, “My wife and four kids miss Minnesota in a big way, and so I’ve accepted the CFO position with Pinnacle Airlines which allows us to relocate back home.” However, Memphis commission president, Paul Morris, want people to relax and not jump to any conclusions. “The city should be concerned about retaining Pinnacle Airlines. I don’t think the city should be concerned about a purported email,” said Morris. Although Morris isn’t overly concerned with the email, he is waiting for an answer from the airlines on their plans to either stay in the bluff-city or to relocate up north. According to Commissioner Morris, “I’ve been told that they have not made a decision about where their headquarters will be. I know that they are looking at Minnesota and they are looking at Memphis.” Pinnacle is currently located in downtown Memphis where they relocated to last year. |

Local Artists Celebrate Cooper-Young Fest
Memphis, Tenn. (Insight News) David Perry Smith Galley brought in local artists to pay tribute to the 25th anniversary of the Cooper-Young Festival.
The 5x5 Art Invitational displayed five pieces of art by five local Cooper-Young artists. According to owner David Perry Smith, "The first year I did this it was just a big group show of probably about two dozen." This year the gallery packed the house with families of various backgrounds and ethnicities. The attendees dined on wine, cheeses and fruit as the live band played hits from Staxx and Motown. Local artist Karen Capps had a few fans there, "We came out tonight to see Karen Bottle Caps pieces which we've got in our own collection," said Leslie Craft. The Cooper-Young Festival allows many other artists to show their talents, by displaying them at various booths for the public to see and to purchase. |

Tearing Down the Mid-South Coliseum
Memphis, Tenn. (Insight News) Memphis city officials have new plans of tearing down the Mid-South Coliseum and build Memphis’s first athletic sports event center. With the Zippin Pippin roller coaster in Green Bay, memories of Libertyland and the relocation of the Mid-South Fair the area appear to some as an ideal place for a sports complex.
The new plans also include retail stores, hotels and baseball fields courtesy of baseball Hall of Famer Tim McCarver. If approved the center will be combined with the renovating Liberty Bowl and the KROC Center that is scheduled to open January 2013. Revitalizing Mid-Town is the goal to make the neighborhood more appealing. But for some the coliseum is a historic landmark and should not be torn down. “I wish they wouldn’t tear it down, I mean there’s a lot of history in this building. I graduated in 92 out of this building and it’s just a shame that they’re gonna tear it down. There’s really nothing wrong with the building that I can see,” said Jason Parrish. However, others feel the coliseum should be torn down because it is only costing the taxpayers money and pretty much wasting space And if the coliseum was operating it would hardly be used, because of the non-compete clause with the Memphis Grizzlies. “I think they should go ahead and tear it down, it does have a lot of history. I mean I was little and use to watch wrestling matches and everything on channel 5. But you have something sitting there that you are just not using,” said Coach Jones. |
