Frosh Camp Meeting by Christian Hudson

The Student Involvement Affairs held a meeting to discuss the
upcoming “Frosh Camp” that will take place during the 20-13 summer break. Frosh
Camp is a four day camp for incoming freshman that gives new students an upper
hand on their first year by teaching what to expect and introducing them to all that the U of M has to offer. In the meeting hundreds of students gathered to listen in on the opportunity to be a Frosh camp counselor. A few of the Camp’s instructors gave brief lectures informing the students about frosh camp and the requirements to be a counselor. Instructors also answered questions and told the students how memorable they should make camp for the thousands of students they will impact throughout camp. They hope to make it the most exciting part of summer and hope they leave camp ready and excited about starting college at The University of
  Memphis

A series of neighboring stores on Highland strip are seeing development changes, which they apart of. The 42-year-old "Whatever" store is one of a few stores, such as the Meat Market and the Submarine restaurant, that will not be able to renew their lease next year due to new company ownership. The new company plans to build a "Super" McDonald's in the place of three business that have been apart of the community for over forty years. In fact the meat factory has been around for almost 100 years. The owner of the "Whatever" store has tried to renew the lease but did not have any luck because the whole building will be bought by a different company that wishes to bring new companies over. The life of a student at a university is undoubtedly full of problems and stress. In addition, they may also have more opportunities but are obligated to higher tuition and harder classes compared to a community college. There are a high number of students that are unaware of the help that can receive to keep from dropping out or taking out large loans. Organizations such as TRiO help students in need of financial aid, guidance and support. TRiO is a federally funded program that aid students with low income, first generation students, disabled, and etc. Councilors have bi-weekly meetings with students to go over goals, life and grades. Students must be a member for a year to receive financial aid and with in that year complete they must complete six work shops and those bi-weekly meetings. TRiO is one of many well needed organizations at the University of Memphis campus that goals are to meet the needs of students in many ways.

Big East Movement by Christian Hudson

The University of Memphis football team began their last season in the Conference USA on September 1st. The tigers hosted UT Martin that day but unfortunately were defeated lost of 20-17. Fredrico Doss, a junior at the University of Memphis, says, "the team is still getting use to the new coach and I think this will be a learning season. They are in fact showing improvements in their offense, but are having problems still finishing games." Neither games versus Arkansas State and UT Martin were a lose of more than five points, which shows signs of improvements in the team as a whole. The 2013-2014 season will be the beginning of the U of M’s journey as a Big East Conference school, which certainly is a test for all of the Tiger sports teams.
