The Southern Heritage Classic
The Southern Heritage Classic has been a prosperous and entertaining event for the city and surrounding areas to enjoy for over 20 years. Its founder, Fred Jones Jr., decided to match together two southern football teams in order to bring in thousands of fans and even thousands of revenue.
Ever since the first football game in 1990, rivals Jackson State University and Tennessee State University have battled it out on the football field for fans to see. The football is joined by a series of events throughout the weekend for people of all ages to enjoy. Fred Jones adds, "The Southern Heritage Classic Celebration has become the premier sports and entertainment event in Memphis. While it has taken on the size of a huge city event, it has retained the small-town warmth and feel that is so characteristic of events in the Memphis area." The revenue from the weekend helps generate money for the both the city and the schools. According to the director of the University of Memphis Bureau of Sport and Leisure Commerce the city had an economic impact of 16.2 million from the Classic events. Both schools also receive money to help any financial needs that the schools might have. The events during the weekend include concerts, a golf tournament, tailgate parties, battle of the bands, and the Classic Parade. However, the football game is the main event that fans attend. Sysco CorporationThe Sysco Corporation was founded in 1969 in Houston, Texas. Sysco markets and distributes food and food utensils to hotels, restauants, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and more. The company's products includes fresh meats, seafood, baked items, fruits and vegetables, dairy, beverages, paper goods and more.
Sysco provies services to around 400,000 clients and has enarly 30,000 different products. Every year, the corporation hosts a food show in order to showcase the different products offered by them and other vendors including Tyson's chicken, Sara Lee, Pepsi, Coke, Campbell's Soups, and more. This food show attracts a plethora of current and future customers as well as businesses that are interested in having certain products apart of their facility. Vendors are more than happy to put out new products to potential buyers. Smaller, local businesses gain recognition at these events and are able to sell their products for the city to see. Nick's Worldwide Day of PlayNickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play is a yearly event that is designed to get kids actively playing OUTDOORS. The first event was televised on October 2, 2004. This was shown on all of Nick's channels including Nick Jr., TeenNick, and NickToons.
The children are encouraged to have their schools host an event on that day to get kids active. In honor of the event, on the actual "Day of Play" Nickelodeon cancels all programming from 12 noon ET/PT till 3 p.m. ET/PT. A message appears on the screen at that time encouraging kids to get outside and participate and that regularly scheduled programming will resume at 3 p.m. Once the event is aired, it features special guests including Michelle Obama, Lebron James, and Nick stars KeKe Palmer and Big Time Rush. The Day of Play is also apart of The Big Help Campaign, Nickelodeon's campaign that focuses on 4 issues: education, the environment, community service, and health and wellness. With the help of Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" Aging Commission Meeting

The Older Americans Act of 1965 started the Aging Network, a network designed to help meet the needs of the elderly as well as individuals with disabilities. The Aging Commission funds programs that help with their health, finances, homes and more. The Aging Commission of the Mid-south covers people from Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby and Tipton County. ACMS annually gives about 10 million dollars worth of service out the surrounding communities.
The ACMS works with TCAD and Choices, a program designed to help meet the needs of people who seek long-term care. Long-term care refers to around the clock care including bathing, eating, and other everyday activities that one may not be able to do. A variety of in home services can be provided through ACMS as an alternative to nursing homes.
